The Grünfeld Defence is characterised by 1. d4 Nf6 2. c4 g6 3. Nc3 d5. Named after Ernst Grünfeld, who in Vienna in 1922 famously defeated future world champion Alexander Alekhine with it.
Now fairly popular, it’s a hypermodern defence, allowing white to build a strong pawn centre, which black then attempts to undermine.
