Englund Gambit

The Englund Gambit is characterised by 1.d4 e5. It’s discredited at master level, with GM Boris Avrukh describing it as the “worst possible reply”.

Also known as the Charlick Gambit after early Australian chess champion Henry Charlick, the line is named after Fritz Carl Anton Englund (1871–1933), who sponsored a tournament in which all games had to begin with the position after 4.Qd5.

Any game featuring the Englund Gambit is bound to be exciting, but this game, played in 1995 between K.Movsziszian and P.Schaffarth is particularly fun.
