The Basic Mates
For beginners, the best place to start once you know the rules is to learn how to mate. Here are the basic mates, in increasing order of difficulty.
- Mating with two Rooks and a King against a King
- Mating with a Queen and King against a King
- Mating with a Rook and King against a King
- Mating with two bishops against a king
- Mating with a knight and a bishop against a king – although this counts as a ‘basic mate’, since it’s only against a king, it’s a difficult one that’s even fooled a grandmaster.
